Sunstone Presentation on Human Trafficking

by heather
Last week I attended the Sunstone Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah. I attended to support several friends who were presenting and I attended because I wanted to listen to Ed Smart speak on human trafficking. I feel like this information is worth sharing and more relevant to my old blog than my current one, so I'm back for a minute. The presentation was a panel of 4 speakers (there was a fifth scheduled, but he was unable to attend), and the theme was 'Faith in Action'. The first speaker was Read more [...]

October Quotes

“Women are responsible for two thirds of the work done worldwide, yet earn only 10 percent of the total income and own 1 percent of the property... So, are we equals? Until the answer is yes, we must never stop asking.”- Daniel Craig "To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead."- Thomas Paine “The true wealth of a community is measured by how carefully it listens to its women and how sincerely it values their wisdom. Empowering Read more [...]

September Quotes

"For some reason, people want to see you fail. That's not your problem, that is their problem."- Sandra Bullock "Becoming yourself is really hard and confusing, and it's a process. I was completely the eager beaver in school, I was the girl in the front of the class who was the first person to put her hand up, and it's often not cool to be the person that puts themself out there, and I've often gotten teased mercilessly, but I found that ultimately if you truly pour your heart into what you believe Read more [...]

July/August Quotes

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world."- Robin Williams “I pray every single moment of my life; not on my knees but with my work. My prayer is to lift women to equality with men. Work and worship are one with me.”― Susan B. Anthony "If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one."- Dolly Parton "My coach said I ran like a girl, I said if he could run a little faster he could too." -- Mia Hamm "Each time a woman stands up for herself, Read more [...]

Adolescent Sex Education: History and Policy

by heather
This is a paper that I wrote for my Health Care Policy Class last semester. I thought the topic was important and could lead to some good discussions. I think parents, healthcare workers, policy makers and concerned citizens need to be more aware of these issues and how they are handled. In light of the recent Hobby Lobby ruling, I think it is even more imperative that the public is given accurate medical information about sex. Adolescent Sex Education Policy and Effects “One of the great Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: June

by heather
What I've Been Up to: We've had a couple false starts, but we are potty-training for reals right now. We took the doors off in our house and repainted them. It was a pain, but it really looks nicer. Then we patched and painted every nail hole in our house. I'm not sure why the previous owners put around a hundred nail holes throughout the house, but we finally got around to fixing them all. And our basement is almost finished! Had a yard sale, hooray for scaling down on stuff to move. Spent Read more [...]

May Quotes

by heather
For every woman and girl violently attacked, we reduce our humanity. For every woman forced into unprotected sex because men demand this, we destroy dignity and pride. Every woman who has to sell her life for sex we condemn to a lifetime in prison. For every moment we remain silent, we conspire against our women. ~Nelson Mandela Courage is like a muscle. We strengthen it with use.- Rachel Gordon If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more Read more [...]

February Quotes

"To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize."- Voltaire "You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul."- Mahatama Ghandi "Be honest, be kind, be honorable, work hard, and always be awesome."- Wil Wheaton "Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence Read more [...]

Quotes from January

“In nothing do men more nearly approach the gods than in giving health to men.”— Cicero “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls: ‘You can have ambition but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful. Otherwise you will threaten the man.’Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source Read more [...]

Being an LGBT Ally

by heather
The bigger marriage equality became in the news, the more I thought and determined that I am an LGBT ally. The only problem is I don't actually know anyone who is openly gay. I had a friend in high school that I suspected might be gay, but then we went Disneyland on a high school orchestra trip. He sat behind me on the Matterhorn and in the dark he whispered in my ear "Heather, I love you." Not knowing how to respond I just started screaming. But it led me to believe that he wasn't gay. Sometime Read more [...]
