What I’ve Been Up To: December 2013

by heather
What I have been up to: We had a blizzard. One co-worker said that she has lived here for 22 years and she has never seen a snow storm like that in St George. And not only did we get a snow storm, but the snow stuck around for more than a week. (In fact we still have some in patches in our yard weeks later.) Totally weird for St. George. But the kids enjoyed snow fights and building snow men. I got my neighbor gifts AND my Christmas cards out before Christmas. Wahoo!  (Well, most of them.) Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up to: October 2013

What I have been up to: I made my son a sackboy costume for Halloween. When I was in high school my mom wanted me to take sewing. I opted for Spanish, anatomy and orchestra. I think in the long run those classes have served me well, but the week before Halloween I was really wishing that I had a better idea of what I was doing. However, it turned out descent and he loved it so much he wants to wear it next year for Halloween too. Visited some friends on the Wasatch front. :) I made Read more [...]

Quotes from October

by heather
Here's a few quotes I've come across in the past month that I really enjoyed. “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat, or a prostitute.”- Rebecca West "Speak your mind, even when your voice shakes."- Maggie Smith "It's better to walk alone than with a crowd going the wrong direction."- Diane Grant “Gay people are born into and belong to every Read more [...]

Book Review: My Story by Elizabeth Smart

by heather
My Story by Elizabeth Smart (with Chris Stewart)is both horrifying and beautiful. Horrifying because of what she went through (although she does not go into any kind of graphic detail, which I'm sure most readers would appreciate) and beautiful because of the strength that she has. It is beautiful because through the dreadfulness of her experience she continued to have hope, and because she pulled something positive out of this experience, going on to become an advocate for recovery programs and Read more [...]

Loving our neighbor and 3 reasons we should support same-sex marriage

by heather
When Christ was speaking on earth, someone asked him what was the most important commandment. Here is his reply: Mark 12:30-31 30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. There are many big questions that I don't have the answers to, but Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up to: September 2013

What I've been up to: Homework! I'm having a love/hate relationship with it. I'm enjoying the challenge of school, but sometimes I get tired of so many hours in front of the computer. Ceder City Half Marathon- One of my favorite things to do is go on long runs with my husband. It is not one of his favorite things to do, but he is a good sport about it and comes anyway. Also this is just a beautiful canyon to run. We took our family camping at Goblin Valley. Lots of great hiking and Read more [...]

Young Men’s Lesson on Rape Culture

by heather
Here's the lesson I prepared for the Young Men. It has a lot of overlap with the lesson that I gave to the Young Women. I gave it to them today, and I have to say talking to a group of adolescent boys about sexual assault is kind of intimidating. What I said didn't come out as smoothly as I what I wrote, but I hope they listened enough that really understood the take-home message that they need to be kind to one another. I'm going to start my lesson today with a mini history lesson. I know that Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up to: June 2013

by heather
What I've been doing: My 14 year old sister came to visit for 2 weeks. We did a lot of hiking (in the mornings) and hiding inside in the afternoons, because that's what we do in St. George in the summer time. My mom had a stroke and heart surgery, so I've been...worrying. Went on a mother/daughter Girl Scout campout with Thing 1 Cindy Lou Who fell off a kitchen chair, split her chin open and needed her first set of stiches... the same day that I was getting ready for the campout and my Read more [...]

Young Women’s Lesson on Rape Culture

by heather
With various events in the news in recent months I really felt strongly that my Young Women need to hear and understand about rape and rape culture. I am also aware that it is a sensitive subject, so I talked to the YW's president and the Bishop about it and it was eventually decided that I should talk to all of the YW in my ward, not just my class. It was going to be a fireside, but with scheduling it turned into a 5th Sunday lesson. Here's more or less what I said. I hope that by sharing it, that Read more [...]
