Mormon Journey Part 10: Liberated

by heather
If you guys have read all the way through parts 1 through 9, you deserve a gold star for hanging in there. If you're local and you've read through the whole thing and you want a prize, I'll give you some of my food storage. So like many committed Mormons, learning this information was painful. I thought that if I just kept researching I would find information to help me keep my faith. I prayed and researched and waited for General Conference (April 2013). Like a good Mormon girl I brought my questions Read more [...]

Adolescent Sex Education: History and Policy

by heather
This is a paper that I wrote for my Health Care Policy Class last semester. I thought the topic was important and could lead to some good discussions. I think parents, healthcare workers, policy makers and concerned citizens need to be more aware of these issues and how they are handled. In light of the recent Hobby Lobby ruling, I think it is even more imperative that the public is given accurate medical information about sex. Adolescent Sex Education Policy and Effects “One of the great Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: May 2014

by heather
I finished the semester (did well) and the kids finished the school year. May is always very busy. It's started getting warm here so we've been hitting the swimming pool and the splash park regularly. I cleaned my house like it was my new religion. It's now up on the market. If someone is inclined to buy it, that would be awesome. Or if you know someone who is looking for a 7 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood in St George, send them my way. We left the kids with Grandma and Grandpa for Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: February 2013

What I've Been Up To: I've been busy with homework. Full-time coursework + kids is pretty time consuming. I applied to graduate school. Hopefully get in this time. However if I don't I'll be ok. I have friends here. Moving is a pain. I have projects I am involved in. I can go to a different program, however this one is the one that I really want, so if I got in that would be awesome. I made this Roasted Tomato Soup from Thug Kitchen. It's delicious and has more vegetables than your traditional Read more [...]

If you are in the St George area and want cookies, shoot me an email and we can bring her order form by. Orders have to be in by Feb 10, cookies are delivered the beginning of March. I signed up for 2 grad school classes, but was waitlisted #10 & #17, last semester I was waitlisted #6 for a class and didn't get in. Mormon Journey Part 7: The Shelf Cracks

by heather
I have always had many awkward and misshaped shelf items. Experiences I'd had that didn't fit into the gospel puzzle as I understood it. Experiences that I put on the metaphorical shelf because I couldn't find satisfying answers. Sometimes when it was relevant to the conversation I would bring up one of these experiences. And on more than one occasion the friend at the other end of the conversation would say "Heather, I have no idea how you have a testimony." Which always struck me as really Read more [...]

Being an LGBT Ally

by heather
The bigger marriage equality became in the news, the more I thought and determined that I am an LGBT ally. The only problem is I don't actually know anyone who is openly gay. I had a friend in high school that I suspected might be gay, but then we went Disneyland on a high school orchestra trip. He sat behind me on the Matterhorn and in the dark he whispered in my ear "Heather, I love you." Not knowing how to respond I just started screaming. But it led me to believe that he wasn't gay. Sometime Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: December 2013

What I have been up to: We had a blizzard. One co-worker said that she has lived here for 22 years and she has never seen a snow storm like that in St George. And not only did we get a snow storm, but the snow stuck around for more than a week. (In fact we still have some in patches in our yard weeks later.) Totally weird for St. George. But the kids enjoyed snow fights and building snow men. I got my neighbor gifts AND my Christmas cards out before Christmas. Wahoo!  (Well, most of them.) Read more [...]

Mormon Journey Part 6: Polygamy

by heather
I had come to terms with polygamy. I live in southern Utah and I have multiple friends who are happily living in polygamous relationships. If living that way makes them happy and no one is getting hurt, then it isn't really my business. I was also told growing up that part of the reason that polygamy was necessary was because there were so many more women than men, and Mormon doctrine dictates that a woman has to be married to reach the highest level of Celestial Kingdom. I have a very dear friend Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up to: November

What I've been up to: Thing 1 had a birthday. If you live in the St. George area, the Sand Hollow Aquatic Center is the best deal for you birthday party money. $65 gets you an hour and a half of swimming for 12 kids, plus a hot snack bar item, a drink, a balloon and a party favor for each child. The kids get some healthy activity and I don't have to worry about all of the stress that comes with hosting a children's party at my house. (You do however have to book at least 2 weeks in advance.) Respiratory Read more [...]
