What I’ve Been Up to: August

What I've Been  Up To: (Besides Moving and Homework) Hiked Kanarra Falls with my family. I think this was my favorite activity of the summer. When I get around to it, this deserves its own blog post, Hiked Kolob Canyon with friends and our kids. Southern Utah has so many beautiful views. I'm definitely going to miss it. Hiked the Tuachan Saddle with friends. I sure am going to miss my hiking friends as well as the red rock mountains and trails. My kids started school. Visited Read more [...]

The Big Move

by heather
So a couple weeks ago 'the big move' happened. I was accepted to grad school in April, so I knew this was happening, yet I still spent a good part of my summer in limbo. As soon as last semester was over I deep-cleaned my house and packed up at least half of it. We got a contractor to finish the basement and waited for a buyer. Unfortunately, instead of the expected 6-8 weeks, it took 4 and 1/2 months and everyone who was interested wanted to wait until the basement was finished before they put in Read more [...]

June Quotes

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.”-J.K. Rowling "Being honest may not get you many friends, but it will get you the right ones."- John Lennon "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- Aldous Huxley "Our job is not to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. Our job is to raise children who make the world a little less Read more [...]

May Quotes

For every woman and girl violently attacked, we reduce our humanity. For every woman forced into unprotected sex because men demand this, we destroy dignity and pride. Every woman who has to sell her life for sex we condemn to a lifetime in prison. For every moment we remain silent, we conspire against our women. ~Nelson Mandela Courage is like a muscle. We strengthen it with use.- Rachel Gordon If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more Read more [...]

February Quotes

"To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize."- Voltaire "You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul."- Mahatama Ghandi "Be honest, be kind, be honorable, work hard, and always be awesome."- Wil Wheaton "Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence Read more [...]

What I’ve been up to: March 2013

by heather
Spent >$700 on plumbing repairs- oh yay. My mother-in-law and father-in-law came to visit, the next weekend two of my husband's siblings came to visit, then for spring break his youngest sister and her husband visited and currently my parents and sister are in the midst of a 7 day stay. Yes, now is the time of year that everyone wants to come to St. George. No one wants to come June-September. Can't say that I blame them. Over spring break we hiked in Pioneer Park, we hiked the Temple Quarry Read more [...]

For Those Who Love Book Clubs, but Just Don’t Have That Much Free Time

by heather
I'm back. And you're still here. Oh good. That was a somewhat longer break than planned, two deaths in a month turned into three deaths in six weeks. I have also made significant progress on potty-training Thing 2. Actually being a mom trumps blogging about motherhood.  I enjoy reading many types of books. History, children's books, science-fiction, classics, parenting, cooking, biographies, food storage, young adult and mysteries. I also enjoy discussing books with other people and getting Read more [...]

The Doing and Not Doing Lists of Christmas

by heather
I have recently decided that December is not long enough. I believe that it should be at least 6 weeks long. Would anyone really miss it if January and March were a little shorter? I know that I wouldn't. But as it stands I am not capable of doing all of the Christmasy things that I would like to do. As much as I would love it, the "perfect Christmas" is not going to happen. I concede, I can't get it all done and I don't want to drive myself crazy trying. So I made a list of things that I am doing Read more [...]

13 Simple Secrets for Mommy

by heather
It seems like as a mom there are always more things to do than there is time to do them. And it's very easy for "me-time" to dissipate, especially when your kids are small. Here are a list of little things that you can do that make yourself feel better, even when "me-time" is scarce. (Confession: This is list is a reminder for myself as much as anything.)Exercise- Normally I am of the camp who doesn't pay for gym memberships, they are over-priced and I can exercise on my own for free. The problem Read more [...]

If you were my friend, this is what I would tell you…

by heather
Let's say that we're friends. Your child is sick and you call me for advice. Most likely I will tell you to take s/he in to see the paediatrician. He says that he thinks that the child needs to be hospitalised. Now here is where my advice will help you. I'm going to tell you right now to "pay attention and ask questions". I think I tell almost every parent that I work with to speak up and ask questions. But sometimes because of the stress of the situation, parents just go along with what is Read more [...]
