Sunstone Presentation on Human Trafficking

by heather
Last week I attended the Sunstone Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah. I attended to support several friends who were presenting and I attended because I wanted to listen to Ed Smart speak on human trafficking. I feel like this information is worth sharing and more relevant to my old blog than my current one, so I'm back for a minute. The presentation was a panel of 4 speakers (there was a fifth scheduled, but he was unable to attend), and the theme was 'Faith in Action'. The first speaker was Read more [...]

September Quotes

"For some reason, people want to see you fail. That's not your problem, that is their problem."- Sandra Bullock "Becoming yourself is really hard and confusing, and it's a process. I was completely the eager beaver in school, I was the girl in the front of the class who was the first person to put her hand up, and it's often not cool to be the person that puts themself out there, and I've often gotten teased mercilessly, but I found that ultimately if you truly pour your heart into what you believe Read more [...]

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world."- Robin Williams “I pray every single moment of my life; not on my knees but with my work. My prayer is to lift women to equality with men. Work and worship are one with me.”― Susan B. Anthony "If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one."- Dolly Parton "My coach said I ran like a girl, I said if he could run a little faster he could too." -- Mia Hamm "Each time a woman stands up for herself, Read more [...]

June Quotes

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.”-J.K. Rowling "Being honest may not get you many friends, but it will get you the right ones."- John Lennon "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- Aldous Huxley "Our job is not to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. Our job is to raise children who make the world a little less Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: May 2014

by heather
I finished the semester (did well) and the kids finished the school year. May is always very busy. It's started getting warm here so we've been hitting the swimming pool and the splash park regularly. I cleaned my house like it was my new religion. It's now up on the market. If someone is inclined to buy it, that would be awesome. Or if you know someone who is looking for a 7 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood in St George, send them my way. We left the kids with Grandma and Grandpa for Read more [...]

April Quotes

May we hope that, when we are all dead and gone, leaders will arise who have been personally experienced in the hard, practical work, the difficulties, and the joys of organizing nursing reforms, and who will lead far beyond anything we have done!- Florence Nightingale Gratitude never radicalized anybody. I don't care if they recognize the past, I just want them to get angry about the present and keep going.- Gloria Steinem It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up to: March

by heather
What I've been up to: I helped my kids build Olafs for the snowman building contest at school. I finally got rid of all the girl scout cookies. Over spring break we visited the Las Vegas Children's Museum and Death Valley. We took a trip to Denver and stopped at Arches National Park along the way. I got an interview at the grad school program of my dreams. The drive there was stressful and I got little sleep the night before. The interview didn't go as magically as I hoped, but I Read more [...]

March Quotes

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity"-Seneca "Kindness is the language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see."- Mark Twain "The best way for us to cultivate fearlessness in our daughters and other young women is by example. If they see their mothers and other women in their lives going forward despite fear, they'll know it's possible."- Gloria Steinem “Self-deception operates both at the level of the individual mind, & in the collective awareness of the group. February Quotes

"To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize."- Voltaire "You assist an evil system most effectively by obeying its orders and decrees. An evil system never deserves such allegiance. Allegiance to it means partaking of the evil. A good person will resist an evil system with his or her whole soul."- Mahatama Ghandi "Be honest, be kind, be honorable, work hard, and always be awesome."- Wil Wheaton "Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence Read more [...]

YW Lesson: How do the things I say affect me and those around me?

by heather
I've had a couple requests to start sharing the lessons that I gave to the Young Women last year. Here is one that I gave in September 2013 and felt was important. I really hope that they listened. These are pretty much my notes. I did try to ask questions and encouraged the girls to share relevant stories throughout. How we communicate reflects our understanding of who we are as children of God. Our language can either uplift and encourage others, or it can hurt and offend them. When we use uplifting Read more [...]
