What I’ve Been Up To: May 2014

by heather
I finished the semester (did well) and the kids finished the school year. May is always very busy. It's started getting warm here so we've been hitting the swimming pool and the splash park regularly. I cleaned my house like it was my new religion. It's now up on the market. If someone is inclined to buy it, that would be awesome. Or if you know someone who is looking for a 7 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood in St George, send them my way. We left the kids with Grandma and Grandpa for Read more [...]

Getting Paint Out of the Carpet

by heather
See this face? This face is the sweetness and mischief. Anyone who has a toddler or who hasn't blocked this period of time from their memory knows what I am talking about. Sunday evening I was talking to my sister (almost 14) about what I've been up to. I was afraid she was going to wet her self she was laughing so hard. And what have I been up to? Oh, just cleaning up one disaster after another. Once upon a time I was very productive every day. Now I consider myself victorious if my house Read more [...]

Book Review: Queen of Common Cents: Over 1001 Tips & Facts To Save Time and Money

by heather
Queen of Common Cents: Over 1001 Tips and Facts to Save Time and Money by Michelle Snow RN, MSPH, MSHR, PhD When I saw this book I noticed that the author is a registered nurse and has a Master's degree in Public Health, plus several other letters after her name and thought 'She's a nurse, she's probably really know what she is talking about." I felt like I identified with her. We're both LDS moms, we're both nurses and we're both trying to help people save time and money. So I bought it. As Read more [...]

Secrets to Getting Kids to Help Clean the House & Chore Ideas for 4-6 year olds

by heather
I believe that it is important that my children start learning now about the importance of cleaning up after themselves and learning basic organizing and cleaning skills. It will save them thousands of hours over the course of their lifetimes. It will save them money. It will make them more agreeable roommates, friends, siblings, spouses, etc. It will make them healthier and most probably it will make them happier. I've talked to them countless times about the importance of learning to clean up their Read more [...]

Carpet Stain Remover

by heather
Last month we put our house up on the market. (We've tried to sell our house to move closer to family, but discovered we couldn't really do it without taking at least $30,000 hit, and 'supposedly' we got a steal on our house. So after 5 weeks we took it off.) The day it was supposed to go up I awoke at 4:45 am to the sound of my son vomiting on the carpet. Oh, the horror.  Scrubbing it with Lysol was not doing the trick, so after passing out and waiting for a more reasonable hour, I borrowed my Read more [...]

Organizing the DVD’s

by heather
Recently this cute little one has developed a new hobby. (Take note of the mischief in her eye.) She likes to pull the DVDs off the movie shelf one at a time. She thinks it's a great game to see how many she can get off the shelf before I stop her and put them back. So I decided it was time to re-think how I organize my movies and games. For a long time I've been resistant to putting them all in cd wallets because it makes it harder for small children to find what they are looking for and the Read more [...]

A Visit from the Cleaning Wizard

by heather
So as I have mentioned before, there has been a fair amount of havoc around here. I'm a mom of three kids, I'm not getting enough sleep and as those who know me well can testify, I am a chaos magnet. A side effect of all of this is that I have been losing the constant battle of me versus the mess. A few months ago I made a new friend at play group, we'll call her Sarah. :) She has three very active boys and newborn baby and still manages to keep the chaos to a minimum. For awhile whenever Read more [...]

Maintaining a Clean House

by heather
Maintaining a clean house is just about that, maintaining. You've got to keep the mess at a certain level. If you aren't constantly taking small steps to keep it under control, things get out of hand and quickly. How you run your house depends on your household, needs, circumstances, etc. Here is the dynamic that we have going on our house: My handsome husband- really great about playing with and teaching our kids when he's not at work full-time. He has recently become a vegetarian (with lots Read more [...]

Keeping the Kid’s Bedrooms Clean

by heather
So the biggest battle we have at our house is keeping the kids' rooms clean. They are happy to help me scrub the bathtub, toilets and wash windows, but they act like it's the end of the world when I ask them to pick up their toys. I make all kinds of bribes and ultimatums. If your rooms are clean we can go swimming, have ice cream, go to movies, play video games, etc. This hasn't gotten me very far.  I am fully aware that at the ages of 3 & 5, they do not have the cleanliness standards Read more [...]

Tips for Cleaning- Spring and Otherwise

by heather
Some people would consider me a somewhat of a clean freak. My best friend (and former roommate) has said that she would feel comfortable eating off my kitchen floor at any time. Perhaps I have developed this reputation because when I am stressed about something I cope by cleaning. It's my productive outlet. There are other parts of my house that leave something to be desired. People who know me in real life know that unless I'm really stressed about something I don't have the energy to keep my entire Read more [...]
