November/December Quotes

by heather
"Success on the front of women’s rights will look like a world not only with obvious advances – where no girl is denied access to education, for instance – but also one with more subtle changes in how we regard gender and gender stereotypes. Success also means more women in the House and Senate (where women are, sadly, the most underrepresented group by percentage of population vs. percentage in Congress). Success means that girls aren’t starving themselves to try to match some twisted ideal Read more [...]

Being an LGBT Ally

by heather
The bigger marriage equality became in the news, the more I thought and determined that I am an LGBT ally. The only problem is I don't actually know anyone who is openly gay. I had a friend in high school that I suspected might be gay, but then we went Disneyland on a high school orchestra trip. He sat behind me on the Matterhorn and in the dark he whispered in my ear "Heather, I love you." Not knowing how to respond I just started screaming. But it led me to believe that he wasn't gay. Sometime Read more [...]

Quotes from October

by heather
Here's a few quotes I've come across in the past month that I really enjoyed. “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat, or a prostitute.”- Rebecca West "Speak your mind, even when your voice shakes."- Maggie Smith "It's better to walk alone than with a crowd going the wrong direction."- Diane Grant “Gay people are born into and belong to every Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up to: September 2013

by heather
What I've been up to: Homework! I'm having a love/hate relationship with it. I'm enjoying the challenge of school, but sometimes I get tired of so many hours in front of the computer. Ceder City Half Marathon- One of my favorite things to do is go on long runs with my husband. It is not one of his favorite things to do, but he is a good sport about it and comes anyway. Also this is just a beautiful canyon to run. We took our family camping at Goblin Valley. Lots of great hiking and Read more [...]

Quotes from August

by heather
Here are a few quotes I recently came across that either made me think or just made me happy: "Optimist: Someone who figures that taking a step backward after taking a step forward is not a disaster, it's more like a cha-cha"- Unknown (Found on Upworthy) "Our job is to love people. When it hurts. When it's awkward. When it's uncool and embarassing. Our job is to stand together, to carry the burdens of one another and to meet each other in our questions."--- Jaime Tworkowks "Each of us bears Read more [...]

Easy Dairy-Free Ice Cream

by heather
Ice cream is a big comfort food for me, and unfortunately with baby's reflux I can't have it. My husband who loves me found a recipe for dairy free ice cream on the internet. Then I improved it. I have to say this stuff is pretty darn good. It doesn't give you the "full" feeling that a bowl of ice cream and chocolate give you, but it sure tastes like ice cream, which is good enough for me. It is also significantly better for you than regular ice cream, but you do have to plan for it at least a few Read more [...]

13 Simple Secrets for Mommy

by heather
It seems like as a mom there are always more things to do than there is time to do them. And it's very easy for "me-time" to dissipate, especially when your kids are small. Here are a list of little things that you can do that make yourself feel better, even when "me-time" is scarce. (Confession: This is list is a reminder for myself as much as anything.)Exercise- Normally I am of the camp who doesn't pay for gym memberships, they are over-priced and I can exercise on my own for free. The problem Read more [...]

"Engagement" Lemon Bars

by heather
Random story about my mother-in-law and myself: When we were in high school my husband's house was the place to hang out. I think a part of this was because my mother-in-law is a such a cookie queen. (Slightly related secret: If you want to know what your kids are doing, provide food. The teenagers will show up and sometimes they'll even talk to you.) It certainly wasn't because their house was centrally located. Usually she made chocolate chip cookies and brownies, which aren't so much my Read more [...]
