Kanarra Falls

by heather
Shortly before we moved away from southern Utah we took our kids to Kanarra Falls. If you are ever in the area in the summer, I highly recommend it. It was 25 degrees cooler than St. George, and in late July it felt absolutely heavenly. My kids still talk about this hike on a regular basis and it was my favorite family activity that we did this summer. To get to Kanarravile you take exit 41 off I-15. Travel north until you hit the tiny town (the highway turns into main street) and turn Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: July

New student orientation! And discovered a few more exciting options that I can go with my career. We found a place to live, then decided to consider more options, found an option that I think will be better for our family, although we weren't able to see this last option in person. (Btw, it doesn't really help that there is a housing shortage in the city where we will be moving. It makes me feel more grateful that we found a place.) I found a new job that I think will fit my needs, made it Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: December 2013

What I have been up to: We had a blizzard. One co-worker said that she has lived here for 22 years and she has never seen a snow storm like that in St George. And not only did we get a snow storm, but the snow stuck around for more than a week. (In fact we still have some in patches in our yard weeks later.) Totally weird for St. George. But the kids enjoyed snow fights and building snow men. I got my neighbor gifts AND my Christmas cards out before Christmas. Wahoo!  (Well, most of them.) Read more [...]

Mormon Journey Part 6: Polygamy

by heather
I had come to terms with polygamy. I live in southern Utah and I have multiple friends who are happily living in polygamous relationships. If living that way makes them happy and no one is getting hurt, then it isn't really my business. I was also told growing up that part of the reason that polygamy was necessary was because there were so many more women than men, and Mormon doctrine dictates that a woman has to be married to reach the highest level of Celestial Kingdom. I have a very dear friend Read more [...]

What I’ve Been Up To: April 2013

by heather
What I've been up to: Discovered that it gets hot enough in St George in April to melt those gel window decorations to the inside of your windows. True story. Took my parents and sister to Zion's National Park. We had a great time and the weather was very cooperative. Visited Pioneer Park while the weather was still nice. Volunteering for the St George Children's Museum. Since we moved here almost 4 years ago we've heard that this was going to open. It looks like it's finally going to happen, Read more [...]

What I’ve been up to: March 2013

Spent >$700 on plumbing repairs- oh yay. My mother-in-law and father-in-law came to visit, the next weekend two of my husband's siblings came to visit, then for spring break his youngest sister and her husband visited and currently my parents and sister are in the midst of a 7 day stay. Yes, now is the time of year that everyone wants to come to St. George. No one wants to come June-September. Can't say that I blame them. Over spring break we hiked in Pioneer Park, we hiked the Temple Quarry Read more [...]

First Marathon

by heather
Last weekend my husband and I ran our first marathon, the St George Marathon to be exact. It was perfect weather with great scenery, the best company and I loved it from start to finish.  It was so exciting to finally be running a marathon. When people found out that I was training for the marathon I would consistently get one of three reactions: a) "There is no way that I could ever do that.", b) "Wow, you're crazy." or c) "Wow, you are awesome." Reaction a) is false. I saw a physician that Read more [...]

St George- Local Businesses

by heather
When you move somewhere new, it can be hard to know where to go for various goods and services. It certainly took me awhile to figure it out. (And I can't say I've got it all down yet.) Here are some of the local small businesses that I have had good experiences with. I am not being compensated in any way for endorsing them. They don't even know that I am endorsing them. Each of them have just done a good job at a fair price.Bosch Kitchen Store- 188 North Bluff Street  This place has the Read more [...]

Do’s and Don’ts & Facts About Recycling

by heather
So it has become a habit of mine that every Monday morning I load my recycling bins and drop off in the larger recycling bins that are in the parking lot of my local grocery store. This past Monday I was pretty annoyed with what I saw. There is one bin that is just for paper and a second bin that is for paper, plastic and metals. In multiple places on the bins it says "No glass" and "No cardboard". Yet overflowing from the bins were large cardboard boxes and strew on the ground around the bins Read more [...]
