Should I spend money that I don’t have?

by heather

Recently we have had some unforeseen expenses. It seems like every month this year we have had unforeseen expenses. Car repairs, medical bills, you know the boring stuff that you have to spend money on. One afternoon last week I found myself analyzing the accounts and pondering ‘Should I go out with my husband this evening? We would have to get a babysitter ($). Then we would have to pay for dinner ($$) and then if we did anything else it would have to be indoors because it’s still 110 degrees at 7:30 in the evening ($$$). Should I be spending money that I don’t really have right now?’

For those of you who know me, if you were to ask me that question, I would generally tell you ‘no’. I avoid debt like the plague. For this reason we go without a lot of things that some people consider essential. We don’t have smartphones, we don’t have DirectTV or any form of cable, I mostly cook from scratch, carrying a balance on my credit card gives me a nervous twitch and we only have one car. However, some things are more important than money, like my marriage. So in this case the answer is yes. Going to dinner with a coupon is cheaper than going to marriage counseling. And one on one time with your spouse is just that important.
