What I’ve Been Up to: September 2013

What I’ve been up to:

  • Homework! I’m having a love/hate relationship with it. I’m enjoying the challenge of school, but sometimes I get tired of so many hours in front of the computer.
  • Ceder City Half Marathon- One of my favorite things to do is go on long runs with my husband. It is not one

A view from the Ceder Half: Check out that bad-A tree growing straight out of the side of the mountain. Don't tell me I can't do hard things.

of his favorite things to do, but he is a good sport about it and comes anyway. Also this is just a beautiful canyon to run.

  • We took our family camping at Goblin Valley. Lots of great hiking and climbing fun for the kids.

What I’ve been reading/listening to/watching:

Florence Nightingale– This woman is so inspiring to me. Every time I read or watch something about her, it brings me to the verge of tears. This video is short and worth a watch.

Virginia Henderson– The cinematography for this video is awful, but Virginia Henderson is an inspiring nurse. “I’d like to say what Mark Twain said about being good, that “It is noble to be good, and nobler still to teach others to be good, and easier.” also “Well, we came out with the conviction that you must get the best evidence you could, rather than you must believe what somebody has told you. And it sent them into the literature.”

FYI (if you’re a teenage boy) There’s a popular post, although well-meaning has some slut-shaming undertones from a mother who is posting pictures of her half-naked boys. Kind of double standard. This is a response to that post.

Joanna Brooks I love Joanna Brooks, I would love to be her neighbor or have lunch with her. I love people whose priorities are learning, thinking and caring about people. Here’s an older interview with her.

A Company Stole A Picture of My Daughter Rehtaeh Parsons, Who Committed Suicide After Rape, and Used It In a Dating Ad on Facebook This girl was one of the ones who spurred me to give my big lesson on rape culture. What is happening to her mother made me cry.

Why Healthcare Costs Are High in America A very interesting video about why healthcare costs are so high.

8 Steps to Be Happy I like this. I think it is good to remember.

Mobile Technology Can Put Health in Patient’s Hands Companies are developing smartphone apps to improve healthcare. Very cool.

5 Stories True Stories Behind Iconic Pictures of Bad-ass Women Here are bunch of women from history and the present who you probably don’t want to cross. Inspiring.

The Defeat of the ERA and the LDS Church This was an interesting podcast about the history of US ERA amendment and the involvement of the LDS Church.

The Church and the Proposed Equal Rights Amendment Here is a link from lds.org, stating the official position of the LDS Church on this issue.

Being Sexy– I think this woman brings up some good points about modesty and how we view ourselves.
