Book Review: Tuesdays at the Castle

by heather

Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George was recommended by Thing 1’s elementary school as part of their breakfast club. The students pick one of 2 books and after finishing it they all get together and discuss it over breakfast. We just finished reading it together and I have to say that I really enjoyed reading it with her. It’s geared to children ages 8-12. The story is about a princess, Celie, who lives with her family in a magical castle. The castle has a life of its own, changing and remodeling as is needed by the royal family and guests. One day while her parents are away, they are attacked and rumored to be murdered. Celie, her brother, sister and the magic castle are left to try to defend the kingdom against foreigners and members of the household who are trying to take over in the kingdom. I loved that the main character is smart and brave and kind, although realistic. She is the kind of heroine that I think makes a good example for my daughter. I hope this and stories like it will help my daughter to have confidence in herself when she is faced with tough situations.
