What I’ve Been Up To (other than homework and unpacking):
- We took the kids to the Denver Gem & Mineral Show. When I was a kid my grandpa was very interested in rocks. He helped me start a rock collection and encouraged my interest and study in this. It’s not something I’ve been involved in for decades. Recently Thing 1 has shown excitement and interest in rocks, and I was happy to support this. We took her to this show where in addition to exhibits, there were several kid oriented rock and mineral activities. They had free mineral samples for kids, plus there was a guy who dressed up in impressive life size dinosaur skeleton costumes.
- We took the kids to the free family day at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. I was very surprised that the free day was far less crowded than the other occasions when visited. Hooray for kids learning about nature and science.
- We hiked to the castle ruins at Mount Falcon. Gorgeous scenery and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
- We hiked to Maxwell Falls. Not nearly as exciting of a hike as we were hoping for.
What I’ve Been Reading:
The Latest Parenting Trend: The CTFD Method I think every parent needs this some days.
Utah has the highest rate of adults contemplating suicide. Sad news. Hug a loved one today.
Why the NFL conversation about Ray Rice is so important to me. I don’t know that I would go so far to say the abuse is never forgivable, but I do feel it is abusive to try to push someone to forgive abuse before that person is ready or while they are still being abused. And yes, there needs to be more support for women and children that are abused.
The Real Reason Walt Disney Killed Off Bambi’s Mom This is sad, but it adds some depth and background to a few Disney movies.
The Ghost in Your Genes I watched this PBS Nova movie as a homework assignment. Epigenetics, fascinating stuff.
If Only Poor People Understood Nutrition!– The title is completely snarky. Nutrition needs to be understood and addressed in many ways.
